The Perth metropolitan area has a population of approximately 1.8 million and spans approximately 8,060 km2.
There are 34 local governments located in the metropolitan area. For the purpose of emergency management, the metropolitan area is separated into four districts: North, South, East and Central.
The metropolitan area has both high density and rural living, a major port, national parks and highways, rail and diverse landscape. The metropolitan area is also home to several hospitals and university campuses, as well as local, domestic and international airports.
Natural and man-made hazard events occur throughout the South Metropolitan district. The State Risk Project will be working with the region in 2016 to develop a comprehensive understanding of the highest priority hazards.
